Overview
The Germantown Band Program consists of approximately 500 students in grades 6 through 12. The band offers competitive corps style marching band, concert ensembles, jazz band, indoor color guard, percussion ensemble and chamber music as part of its major program offerings. With its close proximity to the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, the band program is fortunate to offer comprehensive private lesson studios for every instrument.
Since the band’s inception in 2011 under the direction of Justin Harvison, it has enjoyed extensive awards and accolades throughout the country during their 9-year existence including consistent all-superior ratings in marching concert and sight-reading. For the past 6 years, the band has earned the Mississippi Bandmasters Sweepstakes Award. The GHS Marching band was named the Mississippi Bandmasters Class 5A Marching Band State Champions in 2013 and 2017.
The Germantown Symphonic Band is the premier instrumental ensemble at Germantown High School. In 2014, the Symphonic Band was named the Southern Stars Concert Band Festival Triple Gold Medallion Award winner and Overall Grand Champion in Atlanta, GA. The band also performed in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the spring of 2015 at the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival.
In March of 2018, the GHS Symphonic Band performed as a featured band at the 27th Annual Music for All National Festival sponsored by Yamaha and was the first band from Mississippi to perform there in that capacity. The Symphonic Band also performed at the 81st Annual Mississippi Bandmasters State Clinic as the featured high school ensemble.
The Germantown Band is greatly supported by Madison County Schools and the Germantown Band Boosters, Inc.
